I haven't had that much fun watching the Oscars live in years, and I can't really fault any of the awards. I pretty much called it - even though I've only seen a handful, shh - except for Pan's Labyrinth. How happily shocked was the Not-Really-German guy? And I was totally expecting Dreamgirls to take home the Oscar for best song. Funny thing - when they cut to Randy Newman you could tell he knew he was screwed.
- Loved the nominee intro clip. And how this show was much more relaxed and comedic than others. The real party is at the Science Awards, where all the geeks hang out - trust me. ;)
- My favorite dress of the evening belonged to the woman awarded the humanitarian Oscar, Sherry Lansing. My god was it gorgeous. I've looked all over for a picture, but no luck.
- Ellen did surprisingly well, and she totally kept me entertained. Her picture with Clint Eastwood for myspace (taken by Spielberg, of course) was SO MUCH LOVE.
- Speaking of Clint, is there a prompter for the old or nearly blind? There needs to be. (I still love ya, Clint. Just sayin'.) The little man's acceptance speech made me cry, though, as he was sincerely touched, and you could tell. It's a testament to Ennio Morricone's skill when all we see our tiny clips of films over his score and I'm thinking "wow, that movie looks really good, we should totally rent it!"
- I guarantee that there were dozens of stage managers and producers shitting themselves over Morricone not requesting a formal translator. I assume he was slightly more eloquent than dear Clint was. (And I can also guarantee that all the Italian speaking international film nominees in the back row were giving him fists of rock and cheering in the appropriate places.)
- Jack Nicholson looks...well, not phallic, but I'm sure that's what he'd like me to say. He just looks saggy. And weird.
- On the other hand, Hugh Jackman is more and more charming every time I see him. In a joke-around-but-escort-the-lady-across-the-stage-kind-of-way. Kate and Leopold paid off, huh?
- Will Smith happy at the Oscars makes me happy watching the Oscars. He and Jack always enjoy themselves, and that's cool.
- *cuddles little Alan Arkin* I need to see this movie. Why haven't I seen this movie?
- Beyonce sounded amazing, and her dress worked fantastically with the stage lighting.
- Helen Mirren's speech was lovely and her dress was lovely, too. It matched her hair perfectly. :)
- LOVE LOVE LOVE that they read the actual nominated script over the final cut. Very nice.
- I feel bad for Peter O'Toole. Because yeah.
- I suppose when you've been to as many of these things as Nicholson and Keaton, you can pretty much do whatever you want. Especially being silly and taking your time when half the audience is biting their manicures and trying not to pee on themselves.
Did anyone else see the commercial with the zookeeper with a cold and the elephant that steals his credit card to buy him blankets and soup? Totally the highlight of my evening.
