Sep. 4th, 2006 01:47 amI totally got off work at one o'clock this morning. Granted I didn't go in until four this afternoon, but still - it's the principle of the thing. We hosted a party for about six hundred people and I spent most of my night putting temp tattoos on little kids and helping them stick magnets on the back of funny fish designs they made.
It was totally worth it, though, as around nine o'clock we kicked everyone out (momentarily) and ran outside to see the WEBN fireworks. Best. Seat. In. The. House. The aquarium sits right on the river, and they'd secured a small "employee only" area off to the side and directly across from the barge (where the majority of the fireworks are shot from). I managed to sneak in a contraband mp3 player and listened to the entire show, which was truly kickass if I do say so myself. It started off slow, but really kicked into gear when they had fireworks synchronized to the Superman theme (at the climax of which they had a single bright flare shoot straight into the middle and explode like crazy, like Supes showing up to kick ass), which was my favorite moment. There was also some Sinatra, and a good couple minutes of completely purple fireworks to Hendrix's "Purple Haze".
Let me just say this: We were so close we could feel the percussion of the explosions in our pants legs. The fireworks made our clothes vibrate and we were all seriously deaf and blind for a good five minutes afterward. Good stuff, yo. Good stuff. You know, I'm not too keen on concerts, but I love fireworks. There's something really exhilarating about being in a crowd of hundreds, all looking up at the sky and saying "ooh" and "ahh" at the same time.
The party went on until about eleven-thirty, but we didn't leave until midnight. The traffic was still insanely bad, however, and we didn't pull up at the house until almost one. I have to be at work again tomorrow morning at nine, but I think it was worth it. :)
eta: Steve Irwin died? The fuck? I mean, he's the Crocodile Hunter, you know? Damn. Killed by a stingray, oh that's gonna be fun to talk about at work tomorrow...
