Self, what the hell are you doing? You're supposed to be finishing your Big Bang draft prior to begging for betas. THIS IS NOT THE TIME TO BE ADDING SCENES. Didn't you learn this the last time with Dirty Rotten?

Although that scene was one of the best ones in the story, and really fleshed out the First War. Still. No new scenes!

Anyway. I'm going to need a beta once this one is done. Anyone interested? It's around about 30k non-graphic Dean/Castiel circus AU after the Vietnam War. I'm mainly looking for tense checking, making sure everything's in character, and keeping the dialogue as authentic as possible.

Anyone? Bueller?

*puppy eyes*
snarklyboojum: (you're crazy and i love you)
HOLY SHIT. My bigbang has been claimed by an artist. And that artist? I... I...

HOLY SHIT.

I am seriously shaking you guys. Like, my hands are all jittery. I may just cry a little bit here.

HOLY. SHIT.

OMG this final draft needs to be awesome. No pressure. No pressure. No pressure.

I really need to sleep and I can't feel my legs, but my bigbang fic is due tomorrow and I've finally got over 20k and a reasonably complete plot but it's so rough I don't know if any artists could pick up anything from it, let alone something to inspire them.

... Maybe I'll work on it for one more half hour, and then a little bit when I get home from work tomorrow. At seven thirty. Four and a half hours before the deadline.

Almost eleven thousand words in to my Big Bang. ELEVEN THOUSAND WORDS, two thousand of which I produced tonight. Some of that is still in rough format, just dialogue and placeholders until I can fill it out later. I haven't even added in the act descriptions or flushed out a lot of the plot points yet. I've got a long way to go, but it looks like I might actually get there.

Holy shit. I'm not bragging, I'm just a little boggled. I had a moment like this on my last two stories, too. That I-can't-believe-I'm-writing-this-much-or-maybe-this-well feeling. I'm not sure what to make of it right now.

...Of course, part of that could be because it's after four in the morning. *headdesk*
snarklyboojum: (must'a been drinkin' on that post)
So I just wrote this:

It is the nature of the circus to be transitional, a fleeting dream set up and gone again in a day. After so long living like a gypsy, being stationary fit like a bad coat. And as familiar and comfortable as Carver’s winter quarters were, Dean always felt better when he was on the road. He’d spent the beginning of his life in a boxcar, the clickety clack of the railway and his mother’s lilting voice the only lullabies he knew.

With the advent of the highway it was certainly easier to pack everything and go, big trucks and silver bullet campers taking the place of rail cars and steam. Traveling shows like theirs could hit more small towns this way; branching away from the mother roads onto any pavement Bobby was willing to risk the big rigs. Sometimes, when Dean was having trouble sleeping at night, he’d toss the keys to Sam and lean his head against the metal door of their Ford RV and conjure up those train sounds, letting the sway of the road drift him away.

Dean always slept better when they were traveling.

He doesn’t think Sam remembers the trains, and that makes him sad. He knows he doesn’t remember their mother.
And I realized something about my Big Bang universe.

I seem to be incapable of writing anything smaller than 20K. :( That being said, I signed up for [livejournal.com profile] spn_j2_bigbang and I'm currently knee deep in writing a circus fic, but I've hit something of a snag. Without giving too much away, Team Free Will are performers with a declining circus. I've timed it somewhere around the early 50's inspired mainly by The Greatest Show on Earth. Dean, a professional sharpshooter like his father, is "dealing" with the end of WWII and what he did there; this is not the main plot of the story, but it definitely effects the rest.

My main problem so far is that the boys - Dean especially - are very fond of pop culture, making references and listening to a particular type of music. Basing the story in the early fifties lends it a certain romanticism but makes that really hard on my part. (There are certainly references to be made, and circus life makes up a large chunk of that, but the language itself is different, you know?) And then it occurred to me: Why not time it after the Vietnam War, instead? The culture is different and a little more similar to what canon Dean is interested in. I'll have to shift my way of thinking, though, since I was trying to avoid making it too modern.

A setting change won't really alter things too drastically, but I'm not sure. Any ideas, internet? Would you rather read a story set in the early fifties or the late seventies?
snarklyboojum: (sometimes love don't come easy (ssrl))
I've been scrounging the internet for traditional circus acts (WALL OF DEATH, PEOPLE), watched The Greatest Show On Earth, and I'm picking up a library book on the history of the circus in the United States tomorrow at the library. Oh, and I have both a rough outline and a couple paragraphs already written out.

Folks, this AU fic is a-go. Send encouragement and cookies, 'cause this looks to be a long one.
snarklyboojum: (fuck it. let's get pancakes.)
SPOILERS for 7x11 (hee, that rhymes!) )

Also, I may or may not be doing research on writing a circus-themed SPN AU, with Dean as a knife thrower, Sam as a lion tamer, Crowley as the ringmaster, Bobby the manager, and the angels as popular trapeze artists. God help me.
snarklyboojum: (god i HATE this hacker crap!)
So the best friend got me season one of Supernatural for Christmas and we've just now gotten around to watching it. I...may be a little obsessed. And wanting to catch up on fandom but HOLY GOD THERE'S SIX SEASONS OF THIS STUFF and I don't want to be spoiled.

In olden days we'd have knocked out five episodes a night and finish a season in about a week. Now she works early and is fostering her sister's five-month-old baby girl. We're averaging two or three episodes a week. I've gotten my greedy hands on season two but have promised to wait to watch them with her. Thanks to a birthday marathon there are now eight episodes left to watch of season two.

The episodes are getting better and I want more! Dean! Sam! Family issues! Demon plans! WANT!

*whines*

Does anyone still reading this have recs for season one fic? Or maybe half way through season two fics? I've gotten a couple recs lists but I'm leary of reading too far and getting spoiled for later episodes.

Title: Memento Mori
Author: Misty
Prompt: Memento
Character/Pairing(s): Ianto/Lisa, Ianto/Jack
Rating: Let’s go with R for violence, language, and two guys making out adult situations.
Warnings: Needles, home-made tattoos, temporary character death, and weird storytelling.
Spoilers: Pre-series, post Canary Wharf. AU like whoa. No real spoilers for Memento aside from the narrative structure and a few lines too good not to borrow.
Word Count: 24,152
Disclaimer for TW and the movie you are using: It’s their beach; I’m just building castles on it and waiting for the tide. Torchwood is owned by RTD and the BBC. Memento is owned by Newmarket Films and Christopher Nolan.
Summary: “The palest ink is better than the best memory.” - Chinese Proverb
Betas: The fantastic [livejournal.com profile] wynkat1313 and [livejournal.com profile] a_silver_story, who were quite patient with me about this whole thing.
Author's Notes: Special thanks to the mods of [livejournal.com profile] reel_torchwood for being overwhelmingly generous. Lisa’s tattoo looks like this, only without the horizontal lines. Oh, and if you’re considering getting a tattoo please see a professional artist rather than doing it yourself. Your body will thank you.

BEFORE YOU READ: This was too long to post in a single livejournal entry so I was forced to split it up. Please keep in mind that it’s meant to be read as a continuous piece and the division of parts doesn’t really matter. You can either view it on my lj by following the link below or download the entire fic via Google Docs here or as a PDF from Google Docs here.

In preparing to post my [livejournal.com profile] reel_torchwood entry it occurred to me that I never put up a link to my Snupin BLU fic, which posted...well, let's say a while ago and leave it at that, hmm?

This was the first thing I'd written in years and I was very nervous about posting it, but I really like how it came together. I was able to include a lot of my thoughts about Remus and HP canon, and still make it shippy to my heart's content. Sort of. Anyway, here it is! Better late than never, right?

Title: Dirty Rotten
Rating: PG-13/light R
Final Word Count: 32, 157
Disclaimer: Not mine. Characters are property of J.K. Rowling, who has so much more money than me it’s not even worth contemplating.
Warnings: Features naughty language, violence, unrequited RL/SB, and non-explicit het and M/M sex. It’s more or less canon compliant up through DH so, you know, death and taxes.
Author’s Notes: I haven’t written anything in over four years, so taking on something like the Snupin BLU was understandably intimidating. Special thanks to drusillas_rain and lore for their last-minute beta job and prize-worthy hand holding, respectively. This was inspired in part by watching The Filth and the Fury, a document on The Sex Pistols and the punk movement of the late seventies. The plotline started out as something far different than what made it to the actual page, but everything focused around a single idea…
Summary: There are many reasons to lie, and Remus Lupin is familiar with all of them.

Just finished seeing Wicked live for the first time in Columbus. AWESOME. I now desperately want to see it again from better seats (we were waaaaay up in the vertigo-inducing balcony). I went with my mother and best friend, who knew nothing of the play other than that it was about the Wicked Witch. I love taking my mom to shows like this because she gets really into it and applauds like crazy whenever someone performs fantastically (which they did - seriously, SEE THIS PLAY).

The actor playing Fiyero reminded me a lot of James Marsden, which was a perfect fit for his character. But it got me thinking...

... Can anyone else see James Barrowman as Fiyero?

And lord, I understand the Galinda/Elphaba now. Like my mom said, they weren't but they totally could have been.

I... have no words. Really, this is awesome. And needs to be twice as long.

They made them even slashier, how is this possible?

What kind of idiot decides it's a good idea to add floral perfume to tissues? Someone who works at Kleenex! Seriously, wtf?

Because of the high pollen count my allergies have been going apeshit lately. I've been very grateful for the anti-bacterial tissues, but kept smelling this random old-lady smell. It followed me everywhere! It made me sneeze even more, which irritated the skin around my nose and mouth. So now I'm miserable, smell like old lady, and can't keep my nose from running.

And do you know why? MY TISSUES HAVE BEEN FERMENTED IN POTPOURRI! Every tissue has a pleasant floral tang to it.

Damn it. I really liked those tissues, too. (After years of allergic reactions, I tend to enjoy the little things this time of year.)

*sigh* Ah well, since I'm here I might as well point out this awesome list of Passive Aggressive Library Signs courtesy of [livejournal.com profile] wisteria_, though I'd call them more "clever" than "passive aggressive". (My favorite is the french fry.)

I just signed up for [livejournal.com profile] reel_torchwood. Memento, to be specific.

...

I may be insane.

But, but! It could be epic! With retcon, and Cybermen, and the Life Knife, and snarky Owen. Oh, and exciting formatting! Oh god, I'm totally insane.
snarklyboojum: (good times)
My resolution this year is to communicate better and more often with people I care about and, for some bizarre reason, that includes the internet. Aren't you lucky? It is my goal to update at least once a week, though we shall see how it goes from here.

I spent my New Year's Eve working a ten hour shift. I then played poker with family, drank rum and cream soda, and generally felt happy. When midnight rolled around I broke my noisemaker and cut my lip on a cardboard horn...the exact same thing I did last year. And today I did nothing but sleep and read, also a repeat of 365 days ago.

Hmm. Is this an omen for the coming year? Either that or I'm hittin' the way-back machine. I'm telling you now, if I start randomly wearing leg-warmers again I quit the universe.
